Hailing from Argentina, GRIMA MORSTUA (Latin for Grim Death) are yet another addition to a seemingly endless series of bands playing grimy and obscure Black Metal. According to the Encyclopaedia Metallum, their lyrics (which are mostly in Spanish) deal with «The source of all Darkness and its manifestations», so it's not hard to predict what we're dealing with here. The raw and dirty production on "Illustratio Per Horribilem Obscuritatem" gives me a strong feeling that these guys wish they'd been up in Norway in the early 90s. The chaotic riffing and harsh vocals aren't exactly surprising ingredients in the Black Metal melting pot, and does little to distinguish GRIMA MORSTUA from their peers. But in spite of their formulaic approach to a tired niche, the raspy growling going on in Spanish works very well with the grim guitars. The riffs are thick and layered, and the drums are pummeling, though somewhat unremarkable. :Illustratio Per Horribilem Obscuritatem" is by no means a bad release, it just fails to rise above the hundreds of similar bands out there. It has all the signs of a decent underground Black Metal release, and there are a few killer riffs to be found, like the JUDAS ISCARIOT-like rolling guitarwork going on in "Gods Of Rotten Human Flesh". It's just too bad that the album doesn't give me any reasons to keep listening, instead of just dusting off "Under A Funeral Moon".
