Ein Jahr nach “Reginae Mysterium” sind die Slowaken von ORKRIST wieder zurück und das erwähnte Debüt hat mir schon recht gut gefallen, ein Jahr ist vergangen, Zeit genug also für eine Band, um sich weiterzuentwickeln und die Schwächen des Vorgängers auszumerzen und die Stärken auszubauen.

Wenn man sich die Texte ansieht, wird recht deutlich, dass das Quartett sich den Texten von J.R.R. Tolkien zugezogen fühlen, Songs 3-9 sind zusammengefasst als „The Middle-Earth Themes“, also recht deutlich, hehe. Die Band hat sich um ein Mitglied geschrumpft und wer beim Debüt schon mit den Keyboards zu kämpfen hatte, wird auch bei „Grond“ seine Probleme haben, schließlich ist der Hauptsongwriter Crom auch der Keyboarder der Band.

Die Vergangenheit der Band habe ich ja schon im vorhergehenden Review zusammengefasst, drum halte ich mich jetzt hier auch nicht wirklich damit auf, sondern tauche sogleich ein in das zweite Album dieser slowakischen Band. An der Grundausrichtung der Songs hat sich nichts geändert, ORKRIST sind immer noch sehr symphonisch und majestätisch und bringen auch mittelalterliche Einflüsse herein. Gesanglich gibt es auch wieder „Die Schöne und das Biest“-Zwiegesang, wobei Croms Vocals in den meisten Fällen doch fieser klingen als bei vielen Gothic Metal-Bands mit doppelten Vocals.

Das Intro „For Lordaeron“ hat wieder Soundtrack-Qualitäten, „When The Autumn Comes“ bringt uns dann hauptsächlich die sehr guten weiblichen Vocals von Lydia zu Gehör, mit dem bereits vom ersten Album bekannten Heavy Metal-Riffing samt guten Leads und Melodien, Keyboards und Flöten und erst gegen Ende etwas mehr Garstigkeit, teilweise mit einem gewissen Touch früher EDENBRIDGE in den Keyboardarrangements, guter Anfang mit Sicherheit.

Dann kommt der bereits angesprochene Tolkien-Block, bestehend aus abwechselnden atmosphärischen Keyboardinstrumentals und vollen Songs, die es allesamt in sich haben: „Glamdring“, „Angmareddon“ und „Grond“ kommen sehr kraftvoll herüber, wo sich vor allem der verstärkte Einsatz der Double-Bass sehr positiv bemerkbar macht, während wir mit „Dreams Of Life Beyond My Shire Beloved“ einen herausragenden Track, der eine herrliche Balance zwischen atmosphärischen und schweren Passagen, sehr guten Melodien und Gesangslinien, stark, wirklich stark! Eine Kerbe, in die auch „Shadowlord“ schlägt, auch mit einer vergleichbaren Qualität.

Eine Weiterentwicklung zu “Reginae Mysterium” ist unverkennbar und auch wenn noch nicht alles Gold ist, zeigt man doch die gewonnene Reife im Songwriting und auch die Produktion und die visuelle Seite von „Grond“ kann sich absolut sehen lassen, mir gefällt auch der zweite Teil der slowakischen Saga und freue mich bereits jetzt auf den hoffentlich folgenden dritten Teil.

One year after “Reginae Mysterium” Slovakian ORKRIST are back and the said debut already had been to my liking, one year has passed, time enough for the band to develop, to weed out the weaknesses of the debut and further the strengths.

If you look at the lyrics, it becomes pretty clear that the quartet feels attracted to the texts of J.R.R. Tolkien, songs 3-9 even are put together as “The Middle-Earth Themes“, so pretty obvious, hehe. The band has shrunk by one member and who already had to fight with the keyboards of the debut, will also have his problems with “Grond”, as main song writer Crom also is the keyboarder of the band.


The past of the band I already had spotlighted in my other review, therefore I won’t waste any time with this and go right into the second album of this Slovakian band. The basic direction has not really changed, ORKRIST still are very symphonic and majestic and also bring in medieval influences. Vocally we again get the “Beauty and the Beast” vocals, while Crom’s vocals indeed do sound meaner than with most dual-vocalled Gothic Metal bands.

The intro “For Lordaeron“ again has soundtrack qualities, “When The Autumn Comes” then mostly brings us the very good female vocals of Lydia, together with the Heavy Metal riffing including good leads and melodies of the first album, keyboards and flutes and only towards the end some more harshness, at times with a certain touch of early EDENBRIDGE in the keyboard arrangements, good start for sure.

Then comes the already mentioned Tolkien block, consisting of atmospheric keyboard instrumentals and full songs that are more than adequate: “Glamdring“, “Angmareddon“ and “Grond“ are very powerful, where especially the increased double bass comes into effect, while with “Dreams Of Life Beyond My Shire Beloved“ we get a truly outstanding track, which holds a great balance between atmospheric and heavy parts, very good melodies and vocal lines, strong, really strong! A curb that “Shadowlord” also hits into, also with a comparable quality.

So an evolution compared to “Reginae Mysterium” is obvious and even though not all that glitters is gold yet, they show a grown maturity in song writing and the production and visual side as well can more than convince, I also like the second part of the Slovakian saga and am already looking forward to part three.
