“Kyffhäuser” is not a new album by Absurd but rather a collection of previously unreleased songs from the band’s early phase, during which Dark Mark Doom was solely responsible for the music and lyrics. After Doom decided in 1999 not to continue the band, it seemed for a long time that these songs were lost to the public. It was all the more important to me to close this gap.
The album, recorded in 2023, now consists of songs by Doom that we’ve kept as authentic as possible, along with three new compositions. In addition, here is a statement from Doom:
“Kyffhäuser” was created between 1996 and 1997, while I was still in prison. Born out of a yearning to be far removed from everything modern, I read many old legends and scholarly writings about Emperor Friedrich I, known as Barbarossa. Driven by the desire for a resurrection of that bygone era, I transformed this longing into music and lyrics, creating “Kyffhäuser.” I wrote the lyrics and composed the music (except for the parts contributed by Unhold) as a tribute to the Kyffhäuser and to join in the old Germans’ wish that the emperor, in these miserable times, would rise from his long slumber in the mountain with sword and army to lead the people into a better future.
To dispel further lies and misunderstandings: JFN had no part in the creation of this work.
