As already stated in my review to their previous release “Chac Och Ut”, with the Russians from TENOCHTITLAN we have a kind of “virtual” band, where the band members are living in different cities and send each other the different parts. They have forged a very interesting piece of Ethno Doom on the mentioned album, which made me anxious to hear their follow-up album “Epoch Of The Fifth Sun”. And even if more or less they follow the same path as on their former record, TENOCHTITLAN can hardly build up the same intensive and mystical atmosphere which has marked their debut. Only on the fourth track we have the flute for the first time, and even there things don’t really fit 100%, not until track 6, “Teotihuacan”, we get to hear the whole potential of the band. Very varied between Doom and calm passages with partly growls but also excellent clear vocals, partly acoustic guitars, and the flute.. And that is somehow the starting point of this album, because after “Teotihuacan” they finally reveal what they are really capable of, with “Morning Ghosts Of Tikal” a track built on atmosphere and rhythm, and then “The Hymn Of Huitzilopochtli”, a perfect title for an Ethno Doom hymn. Unfortunately it takes really long until they kindle and this could scare away potential fans, but the above-mentioned three songs are fully in the “tradition” of the forerunner, that is why you should first check out “Chac Och Ut”.
